Carolinas AGC is pleased to announce that several of our member companies received major national awards at the recent AGC of America Annual Convention in Grapevine Texas, including Choate Construction Co. receiving the top Grand Award Winner. Choate Construction Company was recognized for having the nation’s best construction safety and wellness plan in 2021 by the Associated General Contractors of America. Each year AGC of America awards a limited amount of Construction Safety Excellence Awards (CSEA) and Carolinas AGC members had a great showing at this year’s award ceremony.

The purpose of the CSEA is to recognize those construction companies who excel at safety performance. The CSEA closely examines each candidate's commitment to safety and occupational health management and risk control. Unlike other safety award programs that limit the criteria to frequency rates, the CSEA selection process is considerably more comprehensive. Each application is reviewed for evidence of:

  • Company management commitment
  • Active employee participation
  • Safety training
  • Work site hazard identification and control
  • Safety program innovation

Participants were required to complete the application form and submit it directly to AGC of America. Members of the national AGC Safety & Health Committee reviewed and judged the submittals at the Construction Safety & Health Conference, held in January. The finalists in each divisional category were then invited to compete in-person at the AGC National Convention for either a 1st, 2nd or 3rd place award. Finalists gave an oral presentation in front of five judges. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards were then determined after oral presentations. The grand award winner, Choate Construction Company, was then selected from among the 1st place winners.

“To be selected as the national Grand Award Winner is such an honor, as is representing the CAGC. Choate gains so much out of this competition. The chance it affords to network with other top-level safety performers as well as be evaluated by such a prestigious group of judges is unique and valuable. Thank you to the AGC and Willis Towers Watson for providing such an impactful opportunity.”
