Construction Inclusion Week 2023

Construction Inclusion Week 2023 will be held from October 16-20, 2023. It is an industry-wide initiative to raise awareness of the need to improve diversity and inclusion in the construction industry. The week is organized by Construction Inclusion Week, a 501(c)(6) organization that provides content and resources to help companies create more inclusive workplaces.

The theme for Construction Inclusion Week 2023 is Culture of CARE. CARE stands for Commitment, Awareness, Respect, and Equity. The week will focus on helping companies create a culture where everyone feels valued and respected, and where everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Each day of Construction Inclusion Week will have a different focus:
  • Monday, October 16: Commitment
  • Tuesday, October 17: Awareness
  • Wednesday, October 18: Respect
  • Thursday, October 19: Equity
  • Friday, October 20: Community Engagement

Companies can participate in Construction Inclusion Week by planning activities around each day's theme. Some ideas for activities include:

  • Commitment: Sign a pledge to create a more inclusive workplace.
  • Awareness: Hold a training session on diversity and inclusion.
  • Respect: Host a panel discussion with employees from different backgrounds.
  • Equity: Create a mentorship program for underrepresented employees.
  • Community Engagement: Volunteer at a local nonprofit organization that serves a diverse community.

Construction Inclusion Week is a great opportunity for companies to show their commitment to diversity and inclusion. It is also a time to learn more about the challenges and opportunities facing the construction industry as it works to become more inclusive.

Here are some additional ways to participate in Construction Inclusion Week 2023:

  • Share your story: Share your experiences as a member of an underrepresented group in the construction industry on social media or in a blog post.
  • Educate yourself: Read books and articles about diversity and inclusion, or watch documentaries and films on the topic.
  • Talk to your employer: Share your ideas about how your company can create a more inclusive workplace.

Culture of Care

Culture of Care LogoAGC of America's Culture of CARE program is designed to help companies create a more welcoming and inclusive environment for all employees. CARE stands for commit, attract, retain and empower. Commit to hire and pay based on skill and experience regardless of age, disability status, ethnicity, gender identity, nationality, race, religion, sex, or sexual orientation. Attract prospective employees by creating inclusive workplaces that are free from harassment, hazing and bullying. Retain high-performing employees by identifying and removing barriers to advancement. Empower every employee to promote a culture of diversity and inclusion.

Companies that commit to a culture of CARE aren't passively thinking about company culture, they are actively working to ensure that every employee — from the CEO to the laborer — has the opportunity to feel valued, respected, and heard. Get engaged by taking the Diversity & Inclusion Assessment and find out where your company stands. Or, take the company pledge and commit to a work environment that is free from harassment, hazing and bullying. Take action to ensure every employee at your company has the opportunity to reach their full potential by building a culture that is diverse, safe, welcoming and inclusive.

Success Story: One student tried to find a job in the construction industry before the program. Although he had the desire, he found he did not have enough experience and was turned away.  He learned about the program and reached back out to a local company and CAGC member. They allowed him to job shadow/work one day a week while in the program.  He did so well, they offered him a full-time role at the end of the bootcamp. He is now thriving in his new role and is beyond thankful for the construction bootcamp opportunity.

Construction Business Academy LogoThe Construction Business Academy is a business development program designed to strengthen minority, disadvantaged and women owned businesses to ensure their sustainability and growth. This comprehensive program will include 12 sessions (one each week, in-person and virtual) that focus on areas critical to the growth and development of the participating company and business owners.  Students will be supported with business coaching and access to technical resources for a full year. Cohorts have been successfully completed in Charlotte and Greensboro. Our Raleigh cohort is currently in session. The fourth cohort of the Construction Business A Academy will be held in Goldsboro in early 2024. Future cohorts will continue to be announced across North Carolina.

By the numbers: Since beginning in January, 2023, 32 students have graduated from the Construction Business Academy. Currently, there are 21 students in the Raleigh cohort with an expected graduation date of later this year.

Success Story: “Going through the CAGC Business Academy has been amazing! I’ve met so many new people in the minority business community and have worked with a few of them since our cohort. Because of this class, my business reaches a broader audience and has more visibility. We have also gained more knowledge and internal support from an operating standpoint because of the topic discussions in class. The program was well thought out with the business owner in my mind.” Melody Compton, Construction Business Academy Graduate, Purified Pros

Council on Women in Construction

While the most recent U.S. Census estimates that women comprise 50.5% of the U.S. population, they still make up just 11% of the overall construction workforce. This percentage has increased in recent years, but much of this increase is confined to women in managerial, technical, and administrative roles. In fact, within construction craft professional positions, where the greatest shortages exist, less than 4% are women.

One of the ways CAGC is addressing the challenge of creating a more inclusive and welcoming environment for women in construction is through the CAGC Council on Women in Construction.  The Council, formed earlier this year, is committed to “supporting, empowering, and mentoring women in construction” and is focused on recruiting and retaining women – particularly in the trades.  NCCER’s report “In Her Own Words: Improving Project Outcomes” will guide much of the Council’s strategic objectives.

The 18 members of the Council represent diversity in gender, race, job duties, background, experience, and size of their company.  Kelly Monroe, Director of Strategy and Business Development for Williams Realty Building & Company and Eric Faulk, Chief Growth Officer for Palmetto Corp. lead the Council.

Council Members:

  • Sherita Evans, SC Development LLC
  • Ben Bishop, Reeves
