QPR Method: QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) is an educational approach aimed at reducing suicidal behaviors by teaching people to recognize the warning signs and offer help.
- Statistics: The construction industry has a high suicide rate, with approximately 45.3 suicides per 100,000 workers. Men are particularly at risk, accounting for 79% of suicide deaths.
- Risk Factors: The industry faces several risk factors, such as chronic pain, sleep problems, isolation, job instability, substance abuse, and high pressure. The culture of toughness and self-reliance makes it difficult for workers to seek help.
- Warning Signs: The document lists verbal, behavioral, and situational cues to identify someone at risk, such as talking about wanting to die, withdrawing from others, or experiencing significant life changes.
- Prevention Strategies: Promoting mental health awareness, encouraging open communication, offering Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs), and training gatekeepers are recommended steps.
