CAGC and panelists who work in the commercial construction industry tackled the issue of employee retention in June of 2024 This is part 1 in an ongoing series of seven round table discussions, each highlighting a specific retention strategy
Part 1: Mentoring
Mentoring programs establish a sense of belonging and support for employees, especially in commercial construction where skills are often passed down through generations. Pairing experienced workers with newer ones fosters knowledge transfer, skill development, and confidence, ultimately leading to higher retention rates as employees feel valued and invested in.
Part 2: Professional Development Plans
Offering structured professional development plans demonstrates a commitment to employees' long-term growth and career advancement. In commercial construction, where skills are highly specialized and evolving, providing opportunities for learning, and upskilling not only enhances employee competence but also boosts morale and retention by signaling a clear path for progression within the company.
Part 3: Employee Recognition
Recognition programs acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of employees, fostering a culture of appreciation and motivation. In the physically demanding and often high-pressure environment of commercial construction, recognizing and rewarding employees for their hard work and achievements is essential for maintaining morale, job satisfaction, and ultimately, retention.
Part 4: Employee Engagement
Engaged employees are emotionally committed to their work and the goals of the organization, leading to higher productivity and retention rates. In commercial construction, where teamwork and collaboration are crucial, fostering an environment where employees feel connected to their work, colleagues, and company mission can significantly impact retention by reducing turnover and increasing job satisfaction.
Part 5: Employee Loyalty
Building loyalty among employees involves creating a workplace culture that prioritizes their well-being, growth, and success. In commercial construction, where project timelines can be lengthy and demands are high, fostering loyalty through fair treatment, opportunities for advancement, and a supportive work environment is vital for retaining skilled workers who are integral to project success.
Part 6: DE&I (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion)
Embracing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace not only cultivates a more innovative and dynamic workforce but also enhances employee retention. In commercial construction, where diversity may be lacking, actively promoting DE&I initiatives creates a more welcoming and supportive environment where all employees feel valued and respected, ultimately reducing turnover and attracting top talent.
