About the Course
Construction professionals need planning and scheduling expertise to ensure project success. Efficient planning impacts time, cost, productivity, quality, safety, and customer satisfaction. Brought to you by the Emerging Leaders Program, this training is essential for all those involved in the construction process, from beginners to experienced professionals.
Participants will learn critical planning and scheduling concepts, methods, and skills. This is a 4-unit 12-hour program, delivered in 4 sessions lasting 3 hours a piece. Enhance your resume by earning your Construction Planning & Scheduling Certificate.
Target Audience:
Anyone in construction on a project team or involved with planning or schedules.
Participants who complete the 4-units receive a digital credential, certificate, and hard hat sticker.
UNIT 1 – Principles & Process

Essential planning principles and core scheduling concepts, methods, and tools Participants are introduced to essential planning principles and core scheduling concepts, methods, and tools. You will come away more confident in participating in the planning and scheduling process.
UNIT 2 – Milestones & Measurement
September 13, 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Increase your planning and scheduling skills to get better results on your projects Building on the lessons of Unit 1, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how to use milestones and “float” to manage and measure project progress. They will learn the basics of pull planning as a team, including a hands-on simulation. They will also learn how to identify and resolve issues before they grow into delays.
UNIT 3 – Predictable Work Flow

Build a reliable scheduling process using the Last Planner® System Based on Lean Construction principles, The Last Planner® System (LPS) is becoming more widely used in the construction industry. It was developed to help project teams meet their schedule milestones and improve productivity by making work predictable.
UNIT 4 – Advanced Methods and Tools
September 27, 2023, 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Skills and knowledge to better manage your projects and avoid costly delays In this final unit, participants will learn the basics of handling schedule delays and recovery from both a contractual and practical point of view. They will be introduced to advanced scheduling methods including 4D. And finally, learn how to build a sustainable scheduling program for their organization.
AGC of America recognizes the Planning and Scheduling Series as qualifying for continuing education hours toward the renewal of AGC’s Certificate of Management-Lean Construction (CM-Lean). Each hour of educational content is equal to 1 hour of CE credit. Attendees may earn up to 12.0 hours of CE credit by attending the entire virtual series.
The cost for the series is $550 per person for members and $850 per person for non-members. If you don’t want to register for the entire series but would like to attend an individual session/unit, contact mbush@carolinasagc.org to register. A-la-carte pricing for individual units is $175 per person for members and $245 per person for non-members. Participants who attend a-la-carte sessions do not qualify for the digital credential, certificate, or hard hat sticker.
About the Instructor
David MacKay, Lean Construction Planner & Consultant (Milestone Lean Consulting) David MacKay is the founder of Milestone Lean Consulting. He helps teams and organizations put Lean thinking to work to design and build better, faster, and cheaper. David MacKay has over 30 years of hands-on experience working on a wide range of projects. With a strong background in planning and scheduling, David supports all aspects of the Last Planner System® from coaching a single project to organization-wide implementation. He provides training and support to organizations on their lean journey, including transformation plans, basic Lean training, Value Stream Management, 5S, Continuous Improvement, and Lean Problem Solving. He is an approved AGC Lean Construction Education Program facilitator, Lean Construction Institute trainer, frequent trainer and presenter at LCI Congress, and has served several years on the Los Angeles/Orange County LCI CoP core team.
♦ Lean Construction Consultant, Trainer, and Coach
David founded Milestone Lean Consulting in January of 2019. Previously he was Learning & Production Manager at PCL Construction, California Buildings. David was first exposed to Lean thinking in the 1990’s and began applying the principles in planning and scheduling construction projects. He started training teams to use the Last Planner System in 2013. Since then, he has brought Lean thinking and practice to many organizations and trained and coached hundreds of project teams. While with PCL Construction, David co-wrote and presented PCL’s Lean Foundations training, co-wrote “The Last Planner System at PCL”, helped launch LPS in several districts across North America, developed PCL’s 5S training, organized and led many Study Action Teams, facilitated Value Stream Mapping and Improvement, introduced “Improvement Action Teams”, and trained and coached Integrated Project Delivery. Since starting Milestone Lean Consulting, David has worked with several organizations to implement organization-wide Lean transformations and make the Last Planner System the way they work.
