Richard Nickel

Richard Nickel, Carolina Bridge, Orangeburg, SC
Richard was born in Orangeburg, SC and during his 43 years, married Amanda Avildsen and had 2 wonderful children, Arleigh who is 14 and George who is 13.

Richard was exposed to the construction industry by his father at a very young age. During his teenage years he would work summers at Carolina Bridge Company and the Summer he graduated from high school lived in a spare trailer on the jobsite that he was working on with Carolina Bridge. After that summer, he went on to get his associates degree in Engineering. Richard loved mechanical work and at one time did consider becoming a crane mechanic, but eventually decided to pursue a career in construction at Carolina Bridge. He started as a foreman in Williamston, NC and then worked his way up to President.

For years, Richard was a valuable member of the CAGC SC Bridge Committee, the SC Design Building Committee, the CAGC/SCDOT Joint Committee, and in 2020, the year that he passed away, was a member of the Board of Directors. Carolinas AGC’s Leslie Clark said “you always knew where Richard stood on an issue and he was always willing to step up to help our staff, our members, and our industry.” It also didn’t take Leslie long to learn what Richard was passionate about, his kids, his Carolina Bridge family, and building bridges.

When the news of Richard’s passing spread throughout the Carolinas AGC family the members wanted to know what they could do, so at the request of Richard’s family, the Richard Nickel Scholarship Fund was created. The scholarship grew to over $8,000 in donations from the CAGC members and will assist students in South Carolina that are pursuing a career in commercial construction industry.

For example, when Dave Simpson became CAGC President & CEO about 8 years ago, Edison was there to help lead efforts along with Board Chair and past Hall of Fame inductee, James Braswell, to make for a seamless and successful transition. In the first week of that transition, Edison told Dave, “Not to worry. We’ll be drinking from a firehose for a month then everything will settle down.” He was right. It settled down and his leadership then helped set the foundation for CAGC to be named Large Chapter of the Year in 2019 by AGC of America.
