  • Introduces the wide variety of hand and power tools used by boilermakers.
  • Basic Materials

  • Provides information needed to identify the different materials used in the construction of a boiler.
  • Oxyfuel Cutting

  • Contains information pertaining to the proper and safe use of oxyfuel cutting equipment to cut steel and iron.
  • Cutting and Fitting Gaskets

  • Describes the various types of gasket materials commonly used in flanges and presents the proper procedure to use for laying out and cutting a flange gasket.
  • Welding Basics

  • Introduces various welding processes commonly used in the construction of boilers and boiler systems.

Boilermaker Level 2

  • Introduction to Boiler Components

  • Introduces the individual pieces of equipment that make up a boiler.
  • Welding Symbols

  • Identifies and explains the different parts of a welding symbol and how to read them on drawings, specifications, and welding procedure specifications.
  • Drawings and Detail Sheets

  • Explains plot plans, structural drawings, elevation drawings, as-built drawings, equipment arrangement drawings, P&ID’s, isometric drawings, spool sheets and detail sheets.
  • Identifying and Installing Valves

  • Identifies installation procedures for various types of valves and valve actuators.
  • Base Metal Preparation

  • Describes how to clean and prepare all types of base metals for cutting or welding.
  • Plasma Arc Cutting

  • Explains plasma arc cutting equipment and safe work area preparation.
  • Air Carbon Arc Cutting and Gouging

  • Describes air carbon arc cutting equipment and processes and identifies the electrodes and safe operation of the equipment.
  • Tube Weld Preparation and Fitting

  • Identifies preparations and fittings associated with tube welding.
  • Pipe Hangers and Supports

  • Identifies pipe hangers and supports found on the job. It also explains how to read and interpret pipe support drawings and symbols.
  • Fasteners

  • Describes and explains installation procedures for threaded, non threaded and insulation fasteners.
  • Spring Can Supports

  • Explains how to identify and select spring can supports.
  • Butt Weld Pipe Fabrication

  • Covers how to prepare pipe ends for welding and how to determine the lengths between butt weld fittings.

Boilermaker Level 3

  • Boiler Pressure Components

  • Describes the pressure components of a boiler plant and discusses several procedures related to boiler safety.
  • Boiler Nonpressure Components

  • Covers the nonpressure components of a boiler plant along with the theory of operation, boiler construction and general maintenance procedures.
  • Advanced Tube Work

  • Presents information on inspection, testing, plugging and replacement of boiler tubes.
  • Special Rigging

  • Introduces the trainee to some of the specialized rigging devices and techniques that are used in the boilermaking trade.
  • BRIL (Brick, Refractory, Insulation and Lagging)

  • Covers the types, functions and hazards of working with BRIL.
  • Boiler Auxiliaries

  • Introduces the trainee to the many different kinds of boiler auxiliary equipment.
  • Tower and Exchangers

  • Discusses the construction and maintenance of towers and exchangers.
  • Testing Piping Systems and Equipment

  • Explains how to perform service, flow, head pressure, hydrostatic and steam blow tests on piping systems and equipment.

Boilermaker Level 4

  • Advanced Trade Math

  • Presents advanced mathematical skills used in the boilermaking trade.
  • Advanced Blueprint Reading

  • Provides an explanation of the graphic information found on P&ID’s, piping arrangement drawings and isometric drawings.
  • Advanced Towers and Exchangers

  • Identifies safety precautions for towers and exchangers. Includes maintenance procedures for a tower as well as removal and installation of exchangers and trays.
  • Advanced Boiler Tube Systems

  • Explains the removal of tubing and attachments, the preparation and installation of tubing and the materials used to build various components of a boiler system.
  • Advanced Pipe Fabrication

  • Presents advanced skills required for pipe fabrication.
  • Stress Relieving

  • Introduces the trainee to thermal expansion and relief methods available to minimize pipe stressors with special attention paid to safety precautions that must be followed for welding or high-heat processes.
  • Quality Assurance

  • Introduces the concept of standardization and how it affects day-to-day work.
  • Boiler Design

  • Introduces trainees to different boiler designs and various boiler components used to increase efficiency.
  • Planning Work Activities

  • Trainees learn to apply the skills presented in previous modules when planning work activities.
